Snowboarding is a form of skiing. It started in the ’70 but gained popularity in the ’90s. Since then, more people gained interest in the sport and, thus, snowboarding technology evolved. Snowboard option #4 – swallow-tail boards. Swallow-tail has V-shaped cut that allows the tail to sink in the snow and raise the nose to provide float while not zapping the legs.

Last snowboard option – split-boards. Split-boards are fit for back country without lifts. It can be split in lengths down the middle to form two skis, allowing the rider to climb mountains with less effort. The board can be re-assembled to fit the ride down.

A car without a snowboard rack looks positively naked. Okay, maybe not. But it does look seriously cool when it does have a rack. It looks the person driving the car has a destination. A purpose. Granted the purpose and the destination is that of a vacation spot so as to conduct some serious loafing off, but what the heck, let him have his fun. The snowboard rack is a dead giveaway.

Other than looking cool, the snowboard rack serves a fairly important purpose. It protects both the car and the snowboards themselves. By securing the boards in place, a lot of potential mayhem gets circumvented. And mayhem is always best when thoroughly circumvented.

If the snowboards are placed in the back seat of the car or in a trunk, the boards may end up moving and sliding all over the place unsecured. To say this could cause a great deal of damage to the internal organs of the car would be a mild comment. Granted, there are those out there saying, “My car is already a piece of junk. I don’t care if the boards scratch it. In fact, I really don’t care if someone steals the four wheeled disaster area.”

For those of you who do want to protect your car and your boards, there are two major brands of snowboard rack currently on the market: Thule and Yakima. A two-bar snowboard rack from either of these companies will cost you over $200; although Yakima tends to be somewhat more expensive.

Most racks from Thule can be used on any vehicle, provided that they do not have rain gutters. Thule racks are simply affixed to the roof in two places, using telescoping bars that allow you to adjust to the width of any vehicle.

It is a fact of life and a rule of the universe, snowboard apparel looks flat out, super cool. One thing that confuses many people is whether or not there is a difference between a men’s snowboard and a women’s snowboard. While technically there is not, there are different lengths and shapes of boards, so be sure to ask the salesmen which type of board they think would be best for you. Additionally, it is important to consider the material from which the board is constructed. Is it wood, fiberglass, or vinyl? The board, obviously, will be the thing you will spend the most cash on, but the other products may add up as well. For example, you will need snowboard wax – which you should apply at least once per season, snowboard apparel – including goggles, a ski mask, gloves, a hat, and a good jacket and ski pants, a snowboard bag and a snowboard helmet and boots if you want to get to the slopes as soon as you can. If your car is not large enough to carry all of your equipment, then you will also need to invest in a snowboard rack to carry your board on. Finally, once you become good at boarding and feel that you may want to continue your hobby, you should pick up a snowboard stomp pad or two to completely personalize your board with slick graphics.

We don’t go around walking with our snowboards, right? So, whenever we transport them from home to the snowboarding getaway, a snowboarding rack on our car’s roof is an addition worth investing for.

Placing a snowboarding rack on the car roof is harder than it looks. The snowboard must be properly balanced to avoid slippage or thuds whenever a bump or a hump is hit on the road. To achieve balance, the snowboard must be positioned in such a way that the front bar of the roof rack has about 2 1/2″ spacing from the snowboard’s front. Don’t forget to turn the snowboard upside down, with its handle facing the roof of the car. Also, the snowboarding rack and the roof rack must be made by one manufacturer since not all snowboards are compatible with the conventional roof rack of different car models.

It is important that straps or bungies are used to be able to securely attach the snowboard on the front and rear bars of the roof rack. Also, locking can be achieved by using padlocks and cables between the two handles of the rack on the front section. In some car models, the roof rack is within a very low clearance with the car’s roof. In this situation, simply place a foam pad or a customized spacer to prevent the handle of the snowboard from thudding on the car’s roof.

A customized snowboarding rack is also available in the market for use at homes. A particular snowboarding rack can handle from a single to about four snowboards in an upright vertical position. A good rack must be sturdy, unbreakable and free from maintenance. By using a snowboarding rack, one can avoid damage to the flooring and walls.
